The Seattle Sounders will defend their Lamar Hunt US Open Cup title October 5 at Qwest Field in Seattle in an all-Major League Soccer championship match against the Columbus Crew after both teams won their semifnal matchups Wednesday.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored the game-winning goal on a 98th minute penalty kick as the Crew defeated DC United 2-1 in overtime at RFK Stadium.
United’s Pablo Hernandez put them on the board with a goal in the 13th minute that would hold through halftime, but, in true fashion for the worst team in MLS this season, tied the game at 1-1 in the 89th minute by having Marc Burch put the ball in the back of his own net.
Meanwhile, at Qwest Field, the Sounders saw Nate Jaqua score in the 10th and 92nd minute to give them home pitch advantage for the LHUSOC championship game in three weeks by beating Chivas USA 2-1.
Fredy Montero put Seattle up 2-0 after Jaqua’s first goal gave them the eventual halftime lead.
Jesus Padilla cut the lead to 2-1 in the 68th minute for Chivas.
