Puerto Rico had the lead in the 72nd minute as Nicholas Addlery and Fabrice Noel teamed to feed a pass to Josh Hansen for a goal before Saprissa’s game-tying shot.
The Islanders, who travel to Rochester, NY Thursday to play the Rochester Rhinos in the first game of a two-game aggregate-goal quarterfinal series in the USL1 playoffs, are 0-2-2 with two points and have no chance of advancing to the knockout stage of the CCL after reaching the tournament semifinals last season.
They will next face Cruz Azul of Mexico (2-1-0, six points) on the road next Tuesday.
Saprissa is 1-2-1 with four points and in third place in the group and will take on Major League Soccer’s defending champion Columbus Crew, who leads the group at 2-0-1 and seven points, at Crew Stadium next Tuesday.
