Abby Wambach may just secure Women’s Professional Soccer Player of the Week honors this week after scoring an unassisted goal in the 44th minute, then assisting teammates Homare Sawa (51′) and Christie Welsh (90′) with goals as the host Washington Freedom beat the expansion Atlanta Beat 3-1 Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD.
Ramona Bachman tied the game at 1-1 with Atlanta’s only goal in the 48th minute.
The Freedom are now 1-1-0 with three points and are tied with FC Gold Pride and the defending WPS champion Sky Blue FC for third place with similar records. Washington will face the expansion Philadelphia Independence on the road next Sunday.
The Beat are 0-1-1 with one point and are tied with the Chicago Red Stars in the cellar of the league standings. Atlanta travels to the Pride this Saturday.
