A news conference will be held Tuesday at the ESPN Zone in New York City’s Times Square where the USA Bid Committee will announce the names of 18 cities to be included in the official US bid to host either the 2018 or 2002 FIFA World Cup, according to The New York Times’ soccer blog (http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com).
The US Soccer Federation originally began with a list of 70 cities with stadiums that meet various FIFA requirements to host World Cup games, but that list was whitted down in August to 27 cities before reaching the current number of 18.
The US bid must be received by FIFA officials by May 14 with FIFA to announced the host countries for both events in December.
Cities like Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago are considered to be locks on the list, but the USSF was impressed with proposals by Glendale, AZ, Foxborough, MA, Houston and Nashville to serve as potential game sites throughout the tournament.
