Midfielder Danny Szetela of Major League Soccer’s DC United will undergo surgery Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

He was acquired from the Columbus Crew in 2009 and started in one of four appearances in league games and three of five appearances in CONCACAF Champions League play.

Also, midfielder Chris Pontius was re-signed Thursday to a new deal after having a terrific rookie season in 2009.

He had four goals and three assists in 28 regular season games, 23 he started. In all competitions, Pontius scored eight goals in 40 of 44 games played.

The seventh overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Pontius was the team’s Volkswagen Fans’ Choice award winner and a finalist for the 2009 MLS Rookie of the Year award.
