United’s Pontius Named MLS Player Of The Week

DC United forward Chris Pontius became the team’s first player this season to be named Major League Soccer Player of the Week Monday for Week 12.

Pontius scored two goals as the United edged the Seattle Sounders 3-2 last Thursday in each team’s last game before the league took its first-ever break for the FIFA World Cup, which runs through June 25.

Pontius was originally credited with a hat trick, but, upon further review, his last goal in the 79th minute was awarded to Adam Cristman.

The award is the first in Pontius’ career and he becomes the fifth American-born player to win the weekly honor during the first 12 weeks of the season.
