Defending Major League Soccer champion Real Salt Lake will host either DC United or FC Dallas in the next round of preliminary play for the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 5-3 in penalty kicks after playing to a 3-3 draw Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.

RSL struck quickly as Robbie Findley put them up 1-0 after seven minutes of play, a lead they took into the locker room after 45 minutes.

Salt Lake extended the advantage to 2-0 at the one-hour mark when Nelson Gonzalez scored, but the Earthquakes forced overtime after 90 minutes when Chris Leitch (69′) and Arturo Alvarez (88′) took charge.

San Jose regained the lead in the 113th minute when Justin Morrow fired off a goal, but Nat Borchers quickly retaliated for RSL four minutes later, causing a penalty kick shootout to take place.

In the first round of the shootout, Will Johnson put Salt Lake up 1-0 with a goal but Alvarez missed his first attempt.

Kyle Beckerman put the Red & White up 2-0 in the second round, but Joey Gjertsen posted a goal to cut RSL’s lead to 2-1.

Findley struck again for the MLS champs in round three, but San Jose’s Brandon McDonald kept pace, giving RSL a 3-2 lead.

Round four saw Robbie Russell (RSL) and Ramon Sanchez (San Jose) trade goals to put RSL on top 4-3 before Andy Williams ended the shooutout with a shot in the fifth round.

The date for RSL’s next game in the preliminary round will be announced after the DCU-FCD game is played April 28 at RFK Stadium.
