Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids announced Friday midfielders Jacob Peterson and Jamie Smith will miss the remainder of the 2009 season.

Peterson torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes and will undergo surgery next week.

He started 12 of 23 games, played 1,131 minutes and had two goals and two assists this season.

Smith recently completed posterior lateral stabilization surgery after injuring his left knee August 30 in the first half against the Houston Dynamo and is now undergoing rehabilitation.

He started three of four games for the Rapids, played 216 minutes, and had an assist August 23 against the Chicago Fire.
