Opara Goal Gives Earthquakes Win Over Fire

Rookie Ike Opara scored the game-winning goal for the San Jose Earthquakes in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 Major League Soccer victory Saturday against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, Arturo Alvarez needed only four minutes of the second half to put the Earthquakes on the board before Chicago’s Marco Pappa scored the tying goal three minutes later.

The Earthquakes, at 1-1-0 with three points, are tied with Chivas USA (1-2-0) for sixth place in the Western Conference standings and will host the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA next Saturday.

Chicago (0-2-1, one point) has yet to win a game for new head coach Carlos de los Cobos and is in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Fire will be at DC United this coming Saturday.
