Major League Soccer and the Major League Soccer Players Union announced Thursday their current collective bargaining agreement, signed in 2005 and set to expire at midnight Sunday, will be honored through February 12 while talks continue on a new agreement.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said “talks have been constructive and both parties believe it makes sense to continue to work hard to reach (an) agreement”, but also stated there are still disagreements to work around in certain areas.
Players have been told by their union to continue to report to their team’s training camps while the extended negotiations continue.
Had the current agreement been allowed to expire Sunday, MLS owners would have instituted a player lockout, which could have possibly delayed the start of the 2010 season.
