MLS Commissioner Meets With Officials In Montreal

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Montreal, meeting with Joey Saputo, president of the North American Soccer League’s Montreal Impact, and government officials about the second-largest market in Canada joining MLS for the 2012 season as its 19th franchise.

The league adds the Philadelphia Union for the 2010 season and the Portland Timbers from the United Soccer Leagues First Division and the Vancouver Whitecaps, formerly of USL1 but now in the NASL, both join in 2011, giving the league 18 teams.

The Impact are the defending USL1 champions but have defected to the NASL.

Montreal opened Saputo Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium, in May 2008. It seats 13,034 fans but, through expansion, could meet MLS’ stadium standards.
