Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was named the winner of Major League Soccer’s 2009 Volkswagen Most Valuable Player award for the first time in his storied career Thursday.

Donovan led the Galaxy this season with 12 goals and six assists in 25 games and was a part of a dramatic worst-to-first turnaround for the franchise, earning them the Western Conference regular season and postseason crowns and their first trip to the MLS Cup title game since 2005.

Donovan beat out Budweiser Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham of FC Dallas and Shalrie Joseph of the New England Revolution for the honor.
