Canadian Teams Win Opening Legs Of USL1 Semis

The Montreal Impact and the defending league champion Vancouver Whitecaps earned first leg victories Thursday in the semifinals of the 2009 United Soccer Leagues First Division playoffs by identical 2-1 scores.

At Saputo Stadium in Montreal, Tony Donatelli had an unassisted eighth minute goal and Peter Byers fed a pass to Roberto Brown in the 20th minute for the Impact’s victory over the Puerto Rico Islanders.

Jonathan Steele had Puerto Rico’s lone point in the 31st minute.

Meanwhile, at Swangard Stadium, Charles Gbeke scored off a Takashi Hirano assist in the 25th minute, then worked with Marcus Haber on the game-winning strike in the 49th minute over their victory over the 2009 regular season champion Portland Timbers.

Ryan Pore had a 44th minute penalty kick to knot the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Both series now shift Sunday to Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, PR and PGE Park in Portland, OR for game two of the aggregate goal series.

Winners will meet in a final, two-game, aggregate-goal series for the 2009 USL1 Championship.
