Mark Watson, an assistant coach with the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer Leagues First Division since 2006, will be serving in the same capacity for Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution throughout their appearance in the 2009 MLS Cup playoffs.
Watson replaces Paul Mariner, who resigned recently to take a position with a European team.
Watson played four seasons with the Battery and is one of six players in team history to play in 100 games.
The Revolution will face the Chicago Fire in one of the two Eastern Conference semifinal series. The two-game, aggregate-goal series begins Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, then heads to Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL November 7.
