The defending United Soccer Leagues First Division champion Vancouver Whitecaps will face the Montreal Impact in an all-Canadian championship series after the final results from Sunday’s second legs of their respective semifinal series.

The Impact swept their two-game series from the Puerto Rico Islanders with a 2-1 victory Sunday at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, PR to take the series by an aggregate score of 4-2.

It will be Montreal’s first trip to the USL1 Championship Series since 2004.

Eduardo Sebrango scored the game-winning goal for Montreal in the 90th minute off a Leonardo Di Lorenzo assist. Peter Byers had an unassisted goal two minutes in for the Impact, but Josh Hansen of Puerto Rico fired off a penalty kick goal in the 86th minute for the 1-1 tie.

In the other semifinal Sunday, the Whitecaps and the regular season champion Portland Timbers played to a 3-3 draw at PGE Park, but Vancouver won the series by a 5-4 aggregate score.

Brian Farber had goals in the 10th and 43rd minutes off assists by Mandjou Keita and David Haynes, respectively, for the Timbers and Alex Nimo had an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute.

Marcus Haber opened the scoring for Vancouver in the fourth minute off an Ansu Torre assist, then got unassisted second-half goals from Martin Nash (60′) and Marlon James (71′) in the draw.

The championship series, with dates to be announced Monday by USL, will also be a two-game, aggregate-goal series for the first time ever.
