I tried to come up with a more creative title for this post- it’s a monumental post that I only dared to hope I’d ever get to write, so I was caught a little off guard.
During this weekends round of games for La Liga, Real Madrid, the child of president Florentino Perez who brought in huge stars to put Madrid back at the top, who were just last week leading the standings having scored one more goal than Barcelona, LOST this weekend.
God, that sounds great to say, and I promise it’s not April Fools- you can check your calendar.
Nope, Los Galacticos of coach Manuel Pellegrini were defeated after 6 rounds of play, plus their games in the Champions League, and preseason. The team that delivered the crushing blow was Sevilla, who are tied with Real Madrid right now- they both have 15 points.
Sevilla opened the scoring when Jesus Navas scored 33 minutes in. Pepe responded 4 minutes into the second half but Renato handed Real their death sentence in the 66th minute, netting his shot.
Now of course I’m sure everyone’s going to come out and say that Real lost because Ronaldo didn’t play- he sprained his ankle during their CL game against Olympique Marseille and wasn’t named in the roster.
To everyone who claims “Ronaldo-dependency,” I say good. This loss will definitely help Real to take a good look at their playing tactics and think about trying to spread the ball around instead of sitting back on their heels and hoping the Portuguese superstar will be able to get them out of the tight spots.
In other news, Barcelona continued their 100% win run, defeating Almeria this weekend 1-0 with a goal from Pedro. Atletico Madrid racked up their first goal this weekend- they beat Real Zaragoza 2-1. Jose Jurado and Antonio Lopez scored for them.
