Wave Defeat Monterrey In OT

Guiliano Oliveiro had a hat trick in regulation play and Josh Rife scored the game-winning goal at 7:15 of overtime as the visiting Milwaukee Wave edged La Raza de Monterrey 19-17 in Major Indoor Soccer League play at Arena Monterrey Sunday.

With the victory, the Wave (3-2) moved into a tie for second place with the Rockford Rampage, a game behind the league-leading Baltimore Blast. Milwaukee will host the Blast in their traditional New Year’s Eve game Thursday at US Cellular Arena.

Genoni Martinez and Byron Alvarez each scored five points for Monterrey (2-4), who are 2 1/2 games behind the Blast in fourth place in the standings. Monterrey hosts the last-place Philadelphia Kixx (1-4) January 3.

Max Ferdinand scored his first professional hat trick, which included a pair of three-point goals, and Lucio Gonzaga hit the game-winning goal as the Baltimore Blast took over the lead in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings Sunday in a 10-8 victory over the Rockford Rampage at the Rockford MetroCentre.

The Blast (4-1) will next travel to US Cellular Arena to face the Milwaukee Wave (3-2) in the league’s lone non-weekend game — an annual New Year’s Eve encounter.

Semir Mesanovic, Matthew Stewart, Bado Radoncic and Eric Lukin scored goals for the Rampage, now 3-2. Rockford is now off until January 9 when they take on the Philadelphia Kixx at Liacouras Center at Temple University.

Lightning To Unveil Mystery Player Monday

The Louisville Lightning will announce a major addition to their Professional Arena Soccer League expansion franchise roster at a noon local time news conference January 4, according to a team release Monday.

The Lightning would only say the player was “well known in the soccer community and has considerable domestic experience.”

Paul Wright had a hat trick, Anthony Medina, Aaron Susi and Kraig Chiles had two goals each, and Nate Hetherington hit the game-winning shot as the Professional Arena Soccer League’s San Diego Sockers beat their amateur affiliate in the Premier Arena Soccer League, the San Diego Fusion, 10-6 Monday in the 2009 US Open Arena Soccer Championship tournament at Del Mar Arena.

The Sockers now host the surprising Estadio Azteca All-Stars, also of the Premier League, Saturday with the winner advancing to the tournament quarterfinals.

The All-Stars became the first Premier league team to defeat a Professional team in tournament history when they ousted the defending Professional champion California Cougars.

Onalfo Returning To DC United As Head Coach

Former DC United player, assistant coach and director of youth development Curt Onalfo will return to the Major League Soccer franchise as their sixth head coach in team history, according to an announcement Monday.

Onalfo, who was 27-29-22 in two seasons as head coach of MLS’ Kansas City Wizards, will be formally introduced at a news conference January 5 at RFK Stadium.
