Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha will have a medical in the next 24 hours ahead of his move to QPR. The 25-year-old has been little more than a fringe player at City and now looks set to link up with former manager Mark Hughes at Loftus Road. Onuoha is driving down from the north-west to have a medical on Wednesday night or Thursday morning and it is understood the move is fairly close to completion. QPR were given permission to speak to the defender last week after agreeing a fee understood to be 2.5million. Time to leave this City: Nedum Onuoha is heading to QPR There have been reports of the fee being as high as 4million fee and wages of up to 80,000 per week, but it is understood that Onuoha would earn significantly less than reported. The former Sunderland loanee will be looking to get his season back on track should he complete the move to west London, having made just three appearances this season. Hughes knows Onuoha well from his time at the City helm and, speaking last week, said he would give him time build up his fitness. ‘The lack of playing time would be factored in,’ Hughes said. ‘We would be mindful of that. Joining up: Mark Hughes looks set to sign Nedum Onuoha at QPR ‘We have to understand he has not had a lot of game time but he is a player I know and as an individual as well. ‘I am sure he will be very keen to make an impression very quickly.’ Should Onuoha sign, he would become QPR’s third signing of the January transfer window – and second of Hughes’ reign – following loan deals for Manchester United striker Federico Macheda and AC Milan’s Taye Taiwo.

West Ham step up 7m Nikica Jelavic chase

Nikica Jelavic has been linked with a move in the January transfer window. West Ham have offered £7m for Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic, BBC Scotland has learned. The English Championship leaders have been in negotiations with the Ibrox club for more than a week. Rangers though, believe the 26-year-old is worth more and could hold out in the hope of an improved bid from elsewhere before the transfer closes next week. Manager Ally McCoist wants any deal concluded quickly so that he has time to find a replacement. McCoist has already described a reported £6m bid from the Hammers for the Croatian international as “not nearly enough” and says no formal bid has been received. However, BBC Scotland understands that West Ham have come forward with an offer for Jelavic. Liverpool and Fulham have also shown interest in the player. Jelavic, who has scored 30 goals for Rangers, made the switch to Glasgow from Rapid Vienna in 2010 and helped deliver the title under Walter Smith last season. Rangers have already concluded business this month with the arrival of Swedish midfielder Mervan Celik from Gais of Gothenburg. They ended their interest in St Johnstone striker Francisco Sandaza after he turned down the chance to sign a pre-contract agreement.

Phil Jones in race to be fit for Manchester Uniteds FA Cup clash against Liverpool

Posted by: admin  :  Category: European Soccer

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has revealed that Phil Jones could feature in their FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Saturday. The young defender limped off inside 20 minutes of United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, having twisted his ankle, leading boss Sir Alex Ferguson to forecast that he would be sidelined for several weeks. Since then Jones is said to have made good progress and Phelan believes that the teenager may be ready for a swift return, telling reporters, “Phil’s character is very good. “He is disappointed that, over the last few weeks, he seems to have limped around the football field quite a bit. But he usually manages to recover, so we’re optimistic he can do the same again.” Jones is not United’s only injury worry heading into the clash. Both Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher are ruled out for the season, while Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young have been absent since September and December, respectively. Rio Ferdinand missed the clash with Arsenal after back complaints, while Nani, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick have all been added to a long line of United injury doubts. Phelan knows that, if United is to pull through the testing situation, it will need to use the vast amount of experience it has in the dressing room. “We are not in the greatest state that we possibly could be in ahead of the next four or five games,” he admitted. “However, we can call on all our experience and resources we have at this football club. We’ll have to do that in the coming weeks.”

Kari Arnason rejects new Aberdeen deal

Posted by: admin  :  Category: European Soccer

Aberdeen expect midfielder Kari Arnason to leave in the summer after he rejected the club’s offer of a new contract. The 29-year-old, who moved to Pittodrie from Plymouth Argyle last July, has scored three goals for the Dons. “We made Kari an exceptionally good offer. However, the player believes he can earn a better deal elsewhere,” said a club spokesperson. Arnason scored in the 1-1 draw with Rangers last weekend. And the Icelandic international has been in impressive form for the Dons this season. Aberdeen said they were determined to retain Arnason until the summer, adding: “He is crucial to our plans for the remainder of the current campaign, both in terms of climbing up the SPL table and enjoying a fruitful run in the Scottish Cup.” The midfielder’s lawyer David Winnie, who is a former Dons player, told BBC Sport: “We are very disappointed we have not been able to reach an agreement.”
